It's NOT Un-American to Disagree with the President!

By Kathleen Jones
October 2001

American EagleThe "if-you-don't-support-my-plans-you're-unAmerican" comments beginning to be heard from some in Washington are cause for concern. For working families and unions, this can become a real problem if such thinking is used to exploit the present situation at the expense of labor.

Now, more than ever, with so much attention focused on the international scene, we must remain vigilant, and see to it that special interest groups (such as those that represent "Big Business") do not bulldoze over hard-won workers' and unions' rights.

In the midst of the current flush of patriotism and feelings of national unity sweeping the country (feelings that, I might add, I share with the rest of America!), some things that require a closer inspection can get shuffled out of the spotlight. That is why it is not a bad idea to occasionally step back and look at the larger picture.

While most Americans support President Bush in his role as commander-in-chief of an aggrieved nation, it is also important to recall that he is the same man who, after only six months in office, was responsible for:

  • Packing the Social Security commission with pro-privatization supporters;
  • Supporting a draft of the Free Trade of the Americas that would extend NAFTA throughout the Western Hemisphere;
  • Rescinding strict reporting requirements for union-busting consultants and attorneys;
  • Revoking a rule to reduce the acceptable level of arsenic in drinking waters;
  • Submitting a budget with deep cuts in working family priorities to fund his "millionaire" tax cut;
  • Canceling OSHA grants for 19 workplace health and safety programs;
  • Proposing cuts in federal health care programs for the uninsured by 86%;
  • Suspending and moving to repeal contractor responsibility rules.

This is only a partial list of how the current administration has dealt with health and labor issues. BushWatch, sponsored by AFL-CIO, provides a detailed, month-by-month list of the Bush record as it pertains to working families and their unions.

Remember, disagreeing with the president is NOT un-American. On the contrary, it is one of the freedoms upon which our country was founded. Exercise your rights as an American citizen. Make sure you are registered, and vote! Let your elected officials know where you stand it comes to workers’ and unions’ rights!
