Labor News Online

Enjoy getting your news via the Internet? Here is a list of online labor news sources.

Yahoo News: Labor and Union News: Daily compendium of labor and union news from mainstream media, plus selected video and audio clips.

Google Directory: News / Labor Movement / Work / Society: Links to online labor news sites. (These are independent news sites, such as the ones listed below, not labor union newspapers.)

XPDNC News Links: Not yet comprehensive, but a good start; includes union, progressive, alternative, rank-and-file publications.

LabourStart: Trade union news from mainstream and labor press around the world, edited by Eric Lee. Includes "Perspectives," a column written by Lee, listings of union job openings, and a weekly newsletter.

LaborNet: Website devoted to, "global online communication for a democratic, independent labor movement."

Labor Notes: Labor Notes publishes a monthly magazine, books, and pamphlets, conducts conferences, as well as maintains the website. Limited access to current magazine articles, some online-only content, and archives from 1996 through 2002.

Voices That Must Be Heard: Articles from New York City's immigrant, ethnic, and community newspapers.

NewsLink: For mainstream news, this is a central hub for national, business, and local newspaper, radio, and television internet sites.

Citizens for Tax Justice is a nonpartisan, nonprofit research and advocacy organization dedicated to fair taxation at the federal, state, and local levels.

Environmental Defense is dedicated to protecting the environmental rights of all people, including future generations. Among these rights are clean air and water, healthy and nourishing food, and a flourishing ecosystem.

Good Jobs First is a national leader in providing timely, accurate information to the public, the media, public officials and economic development professionals on best practices in state and local job subsidies. GJF works with a broad spectrum of organizations as they seek to ensure that subsidized businesses are held accountable for family-wage jobs and other effective results.

The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy and GJF (ITEP) is a non-profit, non-partisan research and education organization that works on government taxation and spending policy issues.

National Association of State Budget Officers serves as the professional organization for all state budget officers of the fifty states and U.S. territories. NASBO is an independent association with membership consisting of the heads of state budget offices, state finance departments and their staffs.

The National Governors Association is the collective voice of the nation's governors and one of Washington, D.C.'s, most respected public policy organizations.

All the Web: Fast and comprehensive. AlltheWeb combines one of the largest and freshest indices with the most powerful search features that allow anyone to find anything faster than with any other search engine.

AltaVista: AltaVista provides integrated search results to give users immediate access to relevant information including Web pages, multimedia files and up-to-the-minute news

Dogpile: Find the results you're looking for twice as fast as before by searching multiple search engines at once. Dogpile is a meta-search engine that searches the Internet's top search engines such as About, Ask Jeeves, FAST, FindWhat, Google, LookSmart, Overture and many more.

Google.com: Provides easy access to more than 3 billion web pages.

Mamma.com: The "mother of all search engines." Mamma.com is a "smart" meta-search engine - every time you type in a query Mamma searches a series of other search sites at the same time, properly formatting the words and syntax for each, compiles their results in a virtual database, eliminates duplicates, and displays them in a uniform manner according to relevance.

SearchIQ: A good place to start, especially if you are new to search engines. Provides tips on how to search, and ranks the various search engines on different kinds of searches.

Biography.com: Over 20,000 personalities listed here. Chances are the bio you are looking for can be found here.

Current Population Survey: Joint project of the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Census Bureau. Presents labor force characteristics of the US population on a monthly basis.

CountryReports.org: Collection of worldwide data, from flags to national anthems to current weather conditions.

Encyberpedia: A service connecting to online enclopedias and other sources of information.

Encyclopedia Britannica: View any Britannica article for free, and get links to other related sites.

FedWorld Information Network: If the federal government has issued a report, or kept a statistic on your chosen subject, you can find it through this site.

History Channel: If history is your thing, then you should start your search here.

Information Please Almanac: Free online almanac, filled with all kinds of facts.

Internet Public Library: The reference section sends you to appropriate sites for information on areas ranging from arts & humanities to associations.

iTools: Tools to help you on the Internet, from language to library aids to search engines.

Elements of Style: How tos for writers.

International Trademark Association: Includes listings on nearly 4,000 trademarks and service marks.

One Look Dictionaries: This site draws from more than 500 dictionaries.

The Phrase Finder: Looking for the meaning or origin of a phrase, saying or idiom?

Roget's Thesaurus: Online version of a classic writer's tool.

The Acronym Database: Use this site if you've got the acronym but don't know what it stands for, and vice versa.

Labor Journalism Aids...

International Labor Communications Association: The new web site of the professional organization for labor journalists and communicators in North America. A "members only" section makes available graphics, cartoons, a "rackets file", and a discussion board.

FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting): This media watchdog group provides current reports and research on bias in mainstream media and censorship. E-mail list available (and t-shirts that say "Don't Trust the Corporate Media"!).

National Writers Union: News about labor relations in the journalism / media industry; salary data, contract information.

RefDesk.com: One-stop site for finding information on the Internet. The website has links to almost every major news source as well as to basic and not-so-basic online reference "books".

Robert Niles: How to Find Data on the Internet: Robert Niles, senior producer and columnist for the L.A. Times, developed this site to help research novices find the best information on the Internet. Also available on his site is a tutorial on how to read and use statistics.

UPPNet: The organization for union television producers and radio programmers, UPPNet promotes "production and use of TV and radio shows pertinent to the cause of organized labor and working people." You can also subscribe to their newsletter. The web site and newsletter list all known radio and television shows broadcast in the U.S.
