September 1In 1997, the federal minimum wage was raised to $5.15 an hour, affecting some 7 million American workers. September 5On this date in 1882, thirty thousand workers march in the First Labor Day parade in New York City. For more history on Labor Day, click here. Also on this date. Federal agents raided the IWW (Industrial Workers of the World) headquarters in 48 cities on September 5, 1917. September 9Boston Police Strike of 1919. After the city refused to allow Boston patrolmen to unionize, three-fourths of the police force went out on strike in 1919. The strike led to widespread looting by citizens, and Massachusetts Governor Calvin Coolidge put down the strike by calling out the entire state militia. September 10Lattimer, Pennsylvania Massacre. In 1897 in Lattimer, Pennsylvania, the sheriff and deputies killed 19 and wounded 40 striking miners for refusing to disperse. The strikers, most of whom are shot in the back, were originally brought in as strike breakers but later organized themselves and were engaged in peaceful demonstrations. September 21In Leadville, Colorado, the State militia was sent in to break a miner's strike on September 21, 1896. September 22On this date in 1919, the "Great Steel Strike" began. In all, 350,000 workers walked off their jobs and crippled the industry.
